about

A month late, for reasons I've already made known, but finally, here it is.

The song started out with a bassline which, I readily admit, was lifted off... a cellphone ringtone. More precisely : it was Veronica Mars's ringtone in the episode 'Rat Saw God' of this character's show's second season. I then altered it to make it more dynamic than just the one note repeated pattern, but I did keep the 7/8 tempo.

That was the start. I figured that if I already had such an awkward time signature (best known from Pink Floyd's 'Money' and The God Machine's 'The Love Song' (and if you don't know the latter song, definitely check it out))), I should just go and continue putting in more of them. So when I wrote the drum track, I just threw them in, not caring which they were, just as long as they fit the song. Worrying about how the hell I was going to sing over them, let alone write a rhythmically coherent lyric on them was for another day. But I did manage to do just that and it didn't even take that much effort. The vocals were laid down over a mere four hours spread over two days.

Speaking of the lyrics : those were triggered by a stretch of daily nose bleeds right after completing the instrumental parts for the song last December. It's a yearly recurring winter issue with me, and I was just in the middle of trying to come up with a lyrical theme when another happened, which gave me a bloodied light bulb moment.

The funny thing is that, aside of perhaps the first line and the 'night by night I bleed', the lyrics have nothing to do with nose bleeds. The whole 'bloodletting' theme takes on a more metaphorical meaning for how life as a whole can be seen as depleting itself from birth to death. And blood is, after all, the fuel source that keeps every living thing going and thus a great analogy for many aspects of life. We start bleeding from the day we're born, straight to the grave. As slow death creep, while slowly we're emptied, if you will...

lyrics

AT THE TURN OF DAY AND NIGHT, I BLEED
FROM THE HEART AND THE SOUL AND THE FRAYED, GRATED SENSES

SULLEN TIMES ON SUMMER WINE
BUDDED GREENS AND DESERT CHIMES
FANTASIES OF ONE, DIVINE
PARTNER IN LASCIVIOUS CRIMES

AND IN DREAMS, I BLEED
AND AWAKE, ALL DAYS TURNED NIGHTMARES
AND
FILL THE VOID I FEED
A SLOW DEATH CREEP,
WHILE NIGHT BY NIGHT I BLEED

WASTING HOURS, WANING DAYS
PAST SHADOWS,
LOOMING
AFFECT A RISING,
THOUSAND MILE GAZE

WHILE SILENT REBEL ANGELS
SLEEP

CUT OUT THE HEARTACHE
CUT OUT THE DARK
TRIP THE SWITCH
BLACK DELIGHT

RED RIVER,
STREAMING VEINS
(SCREAM (IN )SANITY)
SCREAM IN VAIN
BLOOD NUMBS THE PAIN

AND IN DREAMS, I BLEED
AND IN DREAMS, ALL DAYS TURN NIGHTMARES
AND AWAKE I NEED
FILL THE VOID,
THAT HOLLOWED HEART

AND AWAKE, I BLEED
AND AWAKE, ALL DAYS TURNED NIGHTMARES
AND
FILL THE VOID I FEED
THAT SLOW DEATH CREEP WHILE
SLOWLY, I’M EMPTIED

Prog, Goth, Rock, something music-y. Definitely dark. Dark is good. If you like dark music with the odd odd time signatures thrown in with the melancholy, this is your place to be.
